Prebiotic Sodas and IBS: Are They Safe for a Sensitive Gut? | Wholesome Start Nutrition

Hi Reader,

If your social media feed looks anything like mine, you have probably seen prebiotic sodas everywhere lately. They promise better digestion and a happier gut, and I get asked about them constantly in sessions.

So I wanted to dig into the real story, and I brought in one of our dietetic interns to help break it down.

Here is the short version. Prebiotic sodas contain fibers like inulin, which feed your gut bacteria, but these are also the same type of carbohydrates found in onion, garlic, and wheat that commonly trigger IBS symptoms. That does not make them bad. It just means some guts notice them more than others.

In the new blog post, we cover:

  • Why prebiotic fibers can cause bloating and gas for some people with IBS
  • The difference between fast-fermenting fibers like inulin and slower ones like psyllium
  • What I actually see in practice with my IBS-C and IBS-D patients
  • How to try a prebiotic soda safely if you are curious, without setting off a flare

If you have ever wondered whether your gut is "too sensitive" or whether you are doing something wrong when a trendy drink leaves you uncomfortable, this one is for you. Your gut's response is information, not a failure.

If you are ready for nutrition guidance built around your gut instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, I would love to help.

It's got me thinking about how the holiday stretch sneaks up the same time every year, and how much easier it is to get through when you've got a plan instead of scrambling in November. So today I want to talk about building a plan that actually gets you through the season, not just gritting your teeth until January! The 3-Part Plan for Heading Into the Holidays Without Starting Over Most people...

Have you ever looked at a meal and wondered... ↓ "Will this make me sick?" Maybe you've started avoiding restaurants. Maybe your list of "safe foods" keeps getting smaller. Maybe you're hungry, but eating feels stressful because you don't know how your body will respond. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. For many people living with gastroparesis and other digestive conditions, food starts to feel less like nourishment and more like something to fear. While making nutrition changes...

Blue yogurt container with soy milk based Greek yogurt called Tezza

My New Favorite Dairy-Free Yogurt Find ↓ Hi Reader, As a GI dietitian, one of the questions I get asked all the time is: "Is there a dairy-free yogurt that actually tastes good?" And honestly? It's a fair question. A lot of dairy-free yogurts fall short when it comes to texture, fiber, protein, or artificial sweeteners. They can be watery, overly sweet, or just not very satisfying. So when I find something that genuinely surprises me, I have to share it. Lately, I've been loving Tezza Foods'...
